Tampa unemployment drops

Saturday, November 24th, 2012

The Tampa unemployment rate slipped down to 8.5 percent in October.

That is down 0.2 percentage point from September and the lowest rate since December 2008.

There were 790,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 9,342,000. The October 2012 rate was 1.7 percentage points lower than the year-ago rate of 10.2 percent. The U.S. unemployment rate was 7.9 percent in October.

The number of jobs in Florida was 7,371,500 in October 2012, up 67,600 jobs compared to a year ago. October was the 27th consecutive month with positive annual job growth after the state lost jobs for three years. The industry gaining the most jobs was professional and business services (+25,600 jobs, +2.4 percent).

Other industries gaining jobs included trade, transportation, and utilities (+23,300 jobs, +1.5 percent); private education and health services (+23,100 jobs, +2.1 percent); leisure and hospitality (+12,500 jobs, +1.3 percent); and financial activities (+6,900 jobs, +1.4 percent).
These industry job gains were partially due to increases in employment services; food and beverage stores; ambulatory health care services; food services and drinking places; and real estate.

Industries losing jobs over the year included total government (-12,900 jobs, -1.2 percent); construction (-4,900 jobs, -1.5 percent); other services (-4,200 jobs, -1.4 percent); information (-1,000 jobs, -0.8 percent); and manufacturing (-900 jobs, -0.3 percent).

These industry job losses were partially due to declines in local and state government; heavy and civil engineering construction; membership organizations; telecommunications; and chemical manufacturing.

Thirteen metro areas of the 22 in the state had over-the-year job gains in October 2012. The areas with the largest gains were Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford (+21,700 jobs, +2.1 percent), Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (+19,300 jobs, +1.7 percent), and Jacksonville (+6,300 jobs, +1.1 percent).
